Just Relax…
Victor B. Cline, a psychotherapist with a PhD in psychology, has spoken to large groups on the topic of family relations for a number of years. In lectures I attended, Dr. Cline showed that the level of stress in our homes is highly connected to the interactions between family members. Intense and/or ongoing sibling rivalry kills a good mood. Often, however, this tension can be alleviated in simple ways by providing children with healthy ways to release tension. Here are some terrific ideas he gave:
Hydro-therapy — in other words, water play, outdoors in a pool or sprinkler, or indoors in the tub, a sink, or a bucket.
Sand-play — again this can be indoors or out, in a sand-box or a dish pan.
Eating — let your kids eat whenever they are hungry, from a selection of healthy foods.
Pets — a living, breathing, loving, non-judgmental pal can do us all some good, and the responsibilities are confidence-builders as well.
Sense of humor — in tense situations, relax, pull-back, and take things in proper perspective.
Trampoline — though I resisted for months, I must now admit, daily, that the trampoline my husband wanted is one of the best purchases we ever made, it’s great fun, great exercise, and great for the attitude.
Super suggestions for a mood adjustment!
