The I Am Special Book

Making books is a fun way to spark interest and creativity in writing and emphasize a child's uniqueness. We first made these simple books when our oldest daughters were seven and four. They have loved reading their books again and again, even as they get older. They are great for pre-readers and young readers as well.

Take nine pieces of paper and write or type the following at the bottom of each page:

Page 1:

__________________'s I Am Special Book.

Page 2:

I am ______ tall. I weigh ______ pounds. My hair is ______. My eyes are ______. Nobody else is just like me!

Page 3:

The most fun I ever had was when ______.

Page 4:

I am very good at ______.

Page 5:

My favorite song is ______.

Page 6:

My favorite book is ______.

Page 7:

My favorite food is ______.

Page 8:

I love to put on costumes and dress up as ______.

Page 9:

I am very special!

If your child is not yet reading, read each question to the student and fill in his responses or have him copy the letters you tell him. Readers can “fill in the blanks” on their own.

Next ask the child to illustrate his captions. On the last page assist him in tracing one hand and one foot on the page and then color in as desired. These are so fun to look back on to see the growth that has occurred. Don’t try to complete the book in one day; take your time!

When all artwork is done, bind the pages together with rings, a report cover, or staples and place it on the bookshelf with the other classics!
