Substitution

Caleb (5): Mom! Good morning!

[Caleb climbs up into his parents bed and gets under the covers.]

Mom: Morning, honey.

Caleb: I love you.

[Hugs mom's head.]

Mom: I love you, too.

Caleb: Mom, see these?

[Hold up two rhythm sticks from the kids' musical instruments box.]

Mom: Yea, are you making music today?

Caleb: No, I’m using the instruments as weapons.

    My attempts at cultural refinement all for naught!

    Ah, aren’t boys grand?

    Oh my, been there!
    James is my one and only boy, and even though daddy was in the military (before James was born) and is now a police officer, I figured I’d try and stave off the “pretending to shoot people with guns” thing as long as I could. so he didn’t have any toy guns. But even BEFORE Bill was an officer, when he was still a manager at an auto shop, and James was only 17 months and had never seen Daddy with a gun, he was holding my manual can opener, with one handle pointing forward like the barrel of a gun, and holding the other one, saying “bang, bang– I shoot you”. I was like “Where in the world did you get that?”

    Perfectly fine to substitute yourself for Ray in a thread titled “Substitution.”

    Cute stuff, Alison. I especially like hearing about how he crawls in bed with you and hugs your head. Nothing better.

    that is exactly how Jarom played with barbies (his cousin’s barbies) at that age!

    I didn’t remember commenting when I read my comments (both of them, babe, which is doubly funny) . . . but I figured it just was the dementia kicking in.

    I’m new there was something with that, Ray.

    Yes, davidson, head hugs are the best. :smile:

    Just had to add this. I heard it on the radio, and as usual, I was only half-listening, so I missed most of the details, but I loved the idea. A group of musicians from SOMEWHERE is raising money by sharing their music. Their intent is to help buy new instruments for people who lost their musical instruments in Katrina. That’s what I call “using instruments as weapons”: to “fight” discouragement and apathy by bringing music and hope back to empty lives. That’s what I thought of immediately when you told us the funny about Caleb (that is, after I was done chuckling.) Give that boy a head hug for me.

    Care if I share the poem, written by St. Francis of Assisi in the thirteenth century? (At least, it is attributed to him.)

    “Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
    where there is hatred, let me sow love;
    where there is injury, pardon;
    where there is doubt, faith;
    where there is despair, hope;
    where there is darkness, light;
    and where there is sadness, joy.

    O Divine Master,
    grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
    to be understood, as to understand;
    to be loved, as to love;
    for it is in giving that we receive,
    it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
    and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

    Amen.”
