Yum, yum, yum. If your mouth is hankering for some barbecue, go no further than Big City Grill.
Sam and I arrived at the grill on a very busy, Friday night. Big City is a smallish, strip mall joint. It’s décor is eclectic, with booth seating, walls covered with signs, and everything from western paraphernalia to bicycles, to snowboards. (There is no evidence of a primary theme.) The place was buzzing and loud. The hostess told us the wait would be about ten minutes. It took only about eight.
We were waited on quite quickly by a friendly waitress. She brought us our water and took our order. In an unusual move, we ordered an appetizer.
While waiting, we sampled the house barbecue sauces. BCG offers a mustard sauce, a tangy sauce, and a sweet sauce. We liked them all, but both preferred the sweet sauce overall.
Soon the Jumbo Onion Rings were brought to our table. The order was smallish, but the rings were hot and crispy and not too greasy. They also offer Three Cheese Fries, Fried Okra, and a few other choices.
Before we finished the appetizer, our entrées were served. I ordered the Shrimp & Baby Back Ribs that was on special that night and Sam ordered a 3-Item Bar-B-Q Combination (with baby back ribs, barbecue beef, and barbecue pork).
The six, large shrimp were light, crispy, and very tasty. The serving size was underwhelming, but the taste was very good. The cocktail sauce was not. Ick. The ribs were absolutely delicious; finger-licking, lip-smacking good.
The “Bar-B-Q” beef and pork were a disappointment. The taste was fine, but they weren’t actually barbecued, as we expected. Theses items are actually smoked and sliced. You can add barbecue sauce at your table, if you like, but that doesn’t bring the infusion of flavors that you get when you cook the meat in barbecue sauce.
Each entrée is served with a choice of sides. We had sliced tomatoes (which were awful), coleslaw (which was good not too sweet, not too vinegary), baked potato (fine), and baked beans (which have an unexpected taste that I don’t prefer). We would have preferred a garden salad, which I see on the web site, but was not listed on our menus. All the meals also come with garlic, Texas toast. Although this whole-wheat loving woman cannot explain it, I just love Texas toast. This was no exception.
There are numerous other entrée choices, such as barbecued chicken and turkey, sandwiches, riblets, spare ribs, steak, and salads. If you’re really hungry, there’s a Feast for Two that gives you a bit of all their main selections.
We couldn’t finish all our food and, so, did not make it to desert. The offerings, however, are tempting. Choices include Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake and Chocolate Mousse Mania. (On closer inspection, however, the latter is made with coffee liqueur, so temple-goers will want to pass on that anyway.)
Much to my surprise, Rib City Grill is a franchise. They have one location each in Washington and Ohio, a whole slew of them in Colorado, and a whole bunch more in Florida, too.
Next time you attend the Mount Timpanogos temple, make a stop at Rib City Grill. And don’t miss the baby back ribs!
