I think the one that did it for me was the one she told new moms she understood what they were going through, because she has had PUPPIES. Or maybe it was the one where she said that marriage wasn't really relevant in today's society... or maybe... I'll just stop.

Alison, I'm glad I gave you the impetus to purge this memory after all these years!

Can I also say that if I ever happen to turn it on and Martha Beck is there...arghhh.

I haven't watched Oprah in years. Thanks for reminding me that I'm not missing much! :rolling:

Thanks so much for coming out and saying you think Oprah is crazy! I have thought this pretty much since being married and having a kid myself, and I find I feel alone in this most of the time. So thank-you! Good to know I'm not the only mother in America who thinks Oprah is completely overrated.

    Welcome to the forum, anaseath.

I guess the thing that irks me is that she can present utterly nonsensical stuff and everyone falls in line because the O said it. At least THINK about what she says first.

OK, the other thing that irks me is when people start quoting her and promoting her and I think, "Don't you have ANYTHING better to do with those FIVE HOURS every week???"

I went to a "Time Out for Women" in which Sherry Dew commented on Oprah! It's been a while but long story short. She went to work the Monday after a General RS Conference. All the "girls" at the office (assuming D.Book) were standing around the "water cooler" taking about a particular subject & were saying "well Oprah said this & Oprah said that". So, S. Dew said, "how many of you went to RS Gen. Conference?" (can you even imagine her asking you that?) Anyway, she got the list of excuses i.e. I didn't know when it was & I didn't have a babysitter, etc. So, in typical S.D. way she says "How hard is it? It's the last Saturday in September & has been for years, it's only once a year!" She went on to say that the very topic "they" had been dicussing was actually addressed in the RS Gen. Conference that year & the women who were talking knew Oprah's view but not the Prophet's! She never mentioned the subject. Sis. Dew went on to tell us how much time & effort goes into the RS Gen. Conf & how it is the one time of the year that we as LDS women get to have the Prophet all to ourselves. His only focus is US!!!

So.......I promptly came home after that talk & "un-TIVO'd" Oprah. Have to admit that I still record her when she has certain guests esp. about finances or medical stuff, but the rest I just leave alone. I am more interested in her guests than her opinions. I really like the talks on budgeting & debt. We are a debt free family but I am always striving to cut corners somewhere & save, save, save....

So that's my take on Oprah...

It's funny, I've had several friends bug me and my sister about "we have to watch Oprah, or Rachel Ray, or whatever talk show." So, we both tried one or the other show I can't remember for about 5 mins and decided this was not for us...I just don't see the draw in her, or daytime TV really. It's funny too, on our local news the other day they were advertising a story for the 10PM news titled, "Is there too much Oprah?? My DH looked up and said dryly, "Yes." So there it was for our house.

    Killer line, Sister Dew. Wah!

Speaking of media, anyone else see the movie Bonneville? Kind of a sleeper starring Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen, and Tom Skerritt. Now, hold onto your hats, the three female leads are all MORMON. THe first two...ahem... lapsed, the last active.

There were a couple of those moments that bugged me with inaccuracies, but overall Joan was a pretty good Mormon Momma.

I watch Oprah once in a while. I turn it on and if it doesn't sound good off it goes. I was enjoying her town hall meetings. You learn alot about how others see the political things. One time I was watching was when it was a follow up on the new book that has taken everyone by storm. For the life of me I can't remember the name, but it was really going to turn your life around. After hearing some of the comments, I turned it off. I realized the scriptures lead us to happiness!!! Didn't need that book. Even a mormon relative said it was to great we should invest in it. I said no thanks--we have the Book of Mormon!

I don't remember every actually watching an Oprah show before! I think it's because after dh & I moved to our first "real job" after graduating from college, I was stuck in a hotel room for three weeks, sick as a dog (pregnant, but didn't know it.) All I did was watch daytime television and that was enough to cure me from ever watching it again. Feeling so nauseated and watching crappy tv kicked any desire to ever do that right out of me, lol!

Whenever I was horrendously morning sick, I tried to watch four-five episodes of "A Baby Story" on the Discovery Channel. Since I was always threatening miscarriage, it was this horribly masochistic thing--watching everyone ELSE have beautiful, healthy babies.

I did that too. for some reason when i an preggers, i watch the grossest shows, like medical shows, and ER and a baby story. My husband used to crack up at me the last pregnancy when I would watch baby shows, and yell at the screen! I had been working in a birthing center, so of course I knew everything about labor and delivery! It made me mad when the nurses did something I didn't agree with, or the mom was a screamer. (granted some women need to scream) He kept asking me, if it made me so mad, why did I watch it? I had no answer.
